Book Club Artists present an installation intended to investigate the nature and purpose of collections; the threshold between the beguiling and banal versus what is chosen to ascend as Art. The cylinder hovers in the center of our installation and is designed to house the Art that has crossed the threshold from clutter into protected artifacts. This cylindrical form mimics the stacking disks of a database, shares the layout of the panopticon, and provides the sublime experience of looking at art objects (almost) entirely alone.
In contrast to the curated artwork of the interior of the structure, the exterior is a reflection of the artists’ workspace, process and toil. Rather than finished pieces of art, the exterior is a boundless mélange of fragments of the artists’ labor.
